Inspiring a Nation

Lieutenant-Commander Gillian Elizabeth Hector was one of South Africa’s most groundbreaking naval figures and the first woman in Africa to qualify as a submarine navigator. Rising from the Sea Cadets to serve aboard the SAS Manthatisi, she broke barriers in one of the most technically demanding, male-dominated domains in maritime and defence. Her discipline, excellence, leadership and dedication to service remain powerful symbols of what young women can achieve when they are given visibility, confidence, structured pathways and support.
The Gillian Hector Legacy Foundation (GHLF) was established to honour this legacy by ensuring that young women — especially those from under-represented communities — can pursue meaningful learning, leadership, and service-sector career pathways. GHLF’s Pillar 1: WomenFirst is the core of its mission, empowering girls with confidence-building, exposure, safe learning environments, documentation readiness, and access to bursaries and study opportunities.

To ensure these young women can thrive in real-world contexts, Pillar 2: Men of Tomorrow strengthens boys’ behavioural foundations — emotional regulation, respect, consent, conflict skills — creating safer learning and workplace environments that support gender transformation.
Finally, Pillar 3: Community Service & Activation provides the practical application of these skills through supervised placements in municipal, tourism, public-facing service roles, and port-based awareness activities. Here, youth gain professionalism, communication ability and real exposure to workplace expectations.
Together, these pillars advance the Foundation’s purpose:
to build confident, capable, professional young leaders who honour Gillian Hector’s legacy through service, opportunity and transformation.
